Clinical Waste Treatment Plant – AMB Ecosteryl 250 x 2 Microwave Treatment Units

2No AMB Ecosteryl 250 microwave
treatment units which provide biological and physical treatment of infectious
clinical waste.

The units are left and right-handed to allow ease of operation and have serial
number: No 14783 and No 14784.
The units were installed in April 2019 as part of the NHS Scotland contingency
operation and ran until September 2020. During their working life, they were
operated for 10346 hours and 9696 hours respectively.
Known as Bert & Ernie for ease of reference at the time, Bert (14783) processed
2086 tonnes of waste and Ernie, 1917 tonnes.
Each unit israted as having a 250kg per hour throughput but the actual throughout
can vary by +/- 10% based on the nature of the waste being processed. The system
works on a continuous manual feed process which is controlled by the units HMI
based on parametric readings which control the temperature and holding time of
the waste to ensure the desired level of disinfection is reached.
The units accept pre-checked wastes presented in specialist wheeled-bins via a
calibrated weight scale into a loading hopper. The 4-shaft shredders then render
the waste unrecognisable prior to the microwave and heating vessel achieving a
non-infectious homogenised “floc”.

Both units render the waste unrecognisable and both units demonstrate
compliance with iSTAATT IV, demonstrating efficacy of treatment with a >6log10
reduction of the biological indicator such as Bacillus atrophaeus, a reduction of
99.9999% for proven disinfection.
